Lookbook x Yoliswa Mqoco
Yoliswa turns furniture into fashion…
To explore LOOKBOOK’s theme – ‘design is more than meets the eye’ – we matched multidisciplinary creative/curator Yoliswa Moleboheng Mqoco with the Samesyn Chair from décor and furniture boutique Palmy Living. We asked Yoliswa to document her experience of living with the chair in a series of images we turned into a lookbook.
My first impression was excitement: I didn’t expected the piece to fit in so well with my own personal aesthetic and the look-and-feel of my home. I’m a huge fan of furniture with black detailing.
I love that it fits my bum! You’d be surprised at how often furniture designs don’t consider fuller figured bodies. I’ve fallen prey to buying pieces that were pretty, but not practical. The Samesyn chair is splendid to look at, but it’s also comfortable and functional.
Living with it has been a pleasure – the only difficult part has been fighting with my partner about who gets to sit on it!
It complements my style because it’s considered and memorable.
For my lookbook, I wanted to shoot the Samesyn chair alongside my current favourite items in my home and closet in a simple editorial. People often ask me how I got the hang of interiors so quickly and my answer is that I look at interiors the same way I look at fashion. It’s the same approach to constructing a look from scratch.
To me, “design is more than meets the eye” means feeling: Anything that I’d wear or purchase for my home needs to leave me with a particular lasting feeling. Once I have that connection, it’s so much easier to piece together a story. If you can’t tell a story with it, well, then, it’s just… stuff.
