Saturn, Return

WAIF’s Gisèle Human, producer & stylist Chloe Andrea Welgemoed and photographer Aart Verrips used what began as a personal narrative and weaved it into a film with a universal story

‘… an excerpt from a poem written by my father. He wrote this poem about me when I was a child. It has stuck with me and continues to remind me of my essential self in a universe that is inexplicable; incoherent, indomitable, despite and in spite of my will to bend it.’ – Gisèle Human

After experiencing a cataclysmic self-shift, jewellery brand Waif‘s Gisèle Human collaborated with Aart Verrips and Chloe Andrea Welgemoed to create a film that could tell her story. Asking ‘How life should unfold, how people ought to be, and who and what I must, ought and should be’ led the team to create a film that tells a universal story, one which reflects a pivotal shift in the way we see ourselves, others and the world around us.

With the use of colour and light, the elements of fire and water all combined to depict things that visually represent her change. ‘The film itself isn’t a Waif film, so much as it is a documentation of change. I feel immense privilege and appreciation to Aart, Chloe, Lourens, Devin, Luke, Lesley and Saadique, who together were able to take what was an abstract experience and turn it into a comprehensible, discernible narrative, and one that can be felt in addition to being seen and heard. ‘ Gisèle Human
