Artisanal, Intentional, Sacred

The Deep Seeing Tide collection by TULSI and Frances V.H perfectly embodies the shifting new world we find ourselves in

Tara Hogan and Frances van Hasselt may be oceans apart, but their visions are perfectly aligned. Based in New England, Connecticut, artist and designer Tara translated her recent art on paper series of minimal collages into a collection of unique Angora mohair rugs through a collaboration with South African artist and weaver Frances.

Although Covid prevented Tara from visiting South Africa and working on location with Frances in the Karoo, the two were so compelled to bring the Deep Seeing Tide collection to life that they continued to develop it over many phone calls and emails.

To create each exquisite, handcrafted rug, every step of the process – from spinning the yarn to carefully trimming the finishes – is carried out by hand by skilled women in rural communities.

Frances says, “The process starts with rain, the delicate ecosystem of the land, the role of herdsmen, the importance of healthy animals to produce quality mohair. The raw fibre is washed, cleaned, dyed and spun and only then does the yarn end up on the loom. Weaving and finishing are the last few steps of this intricate supply chain.”

Five pieces from Tara’s collection – a tide of inner creative conversation – were chosen to be transformed from tactile paper to raw, sophisticated mohair. Each design evokes a memory… that fleeting feeling of being underwater in the ocean, solemn living at present, the moment awaking from a dream…

Rocksalt – Black squid ink Matisse on a sandy beach.

Eventide – the luxury of the deep sea silence.

Bateau – rocks and abstract forms.

Jausmin – speckled with dust from the Karoo.

Sticks– Running down a dream in all ivory streams.

With the concept of luxury evolving into a more abstract world view – clean air, open spaces, health, an appreciation for nature, unrushed meals around a table with friends and family, and creating homes in which we feel safe and calm – Tara and Frances hope that these luxurious rugs will embody this shift and bring Zen and serenity into the homes they end up in.
